The criminal charges against a former Stellenbosch University student, who gained notoriety after being filmed urinating on a fellow student’s belongings three years ago, have been dropped.
Theuns du Toit’s lawyer confirmed Tuesday that his client was acquitted on all counts.
The incident, which occurred in May 2022 at the Huis Marais campus residence, saw Du Toit filmed urinating on the books and laptop of fellow student Babalo Ndwayana.
The footage sparked widespread public outrage and triggered significant protests at Stellenbosch University.
While the university’s internal disciplinary process found Du Toit guilty of multiple violations of its student disciplinary code, leading to his expulsion, he faced separate criminal charges of crimen injuria and malicious damage to property.
The university has reportedly not commented on the acquittal.
