The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a manhunt for a man in connection with the murder of a 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, who was found dead after going on a date with him on Sunday, 25 May 2025.
The SAPS says investigations have revealed that the African male suspect goes by the pseudonym “John”, and drives a VW Polo fitted with the cloned number plate LT 57 JG GP belonging to a Toyota Hilux.
According to reports, the man picked Mongale up from her residential complex in Athol, Johannesburg, driving a white VW Polo at 3PM on Sunday.
He reportedly drove to Alexandra township, Kew and Lombardy West before allegedly murdering Mongale and dumping her body.
“Some of the belongings of the victim which include a phone and a handbag were found abandoned on 9th rd in Kew, Johannesburg.
Her body was found in less than two hours at around 16:50 in Lombardy West on Sunday afternoon by the SAPS with the assistance of community members,” the SAPS said in a statement.
The SAPS is investigating the possibility that John was with a male suspect when Mongale was murdered.
Meanwhile, Gauteng police are also investigating a similar case and are urging women to be extra vigilant and look out for the VW Polo.
