South Africa’s power utility, Eskom, has announced the implementation of Stage 2 load shedding, set to commence today at 4 PM and continue through Thursday.
The power cuts are a measure to manage the constrained generation capacity and ensure a consistent electricity supply throughout the remainder of the working week, according to the state-owned entity.
The decision comes on the heels of significant delays in bringing power generation units back online. Eskom reported that a total of 3 120MW of capacity is still offline due to these maintenance delays.
Adding further strain to the system, the utility experienced an additional loss of 1 385MW in the past 24 hours due to unforeseen breakdowns.
“The primary reason for this setback is the delay in returning several units from planned maintenance,” Eskom stated in their announcement.
Consumers and businesses are urged to prepare for the scheduled power interruptions and to use electricity sparingly during this period. Eskom has promised to keep the public informed of any significant changes to the load shedding schedule.
