Some Siz The World team members have chosen not to come to work this Friday despite it being a normal working day.
They pin on the way this week is structured with public holidays in between.
The team reflected on South Africa’s public holidays and whether there are simply too many of them.
Sizwe Dhlomo pointed out that while people enjoy public holidays, the sentiment may differ for business owners.
“They start talking about lost productivity. Friday is technically a working day, yet we’re choosing not to come in. Even today feels like a go-slow—that’s where the problem lies,” he said.
Mpho Maboi added that while it may seem like South Africa has too many public holidays, there are actually only twelve.
“It’s just unfortunate that for business owners, the majority of these holidays tend to fall in April, which means fewer productive days.
“However, from an employee’s perspective, moments like this are necessary. Like it or not, people reach a point of fatigue, and many have taken this time to apply for paid leave,” she said.
Sol Phenduka highlighted that public holidays aren’t necessarily bad news for everyone.
“If you own a restaurant, you’re likely to see more sales, and if you’re a DJ, you’re probably getting more bookings,” he noted.
