Scotts Maphuma, arguably the biggest Amapiano star of the past year, has come under fire from fans who have labelled him “big-headed”.
Since rising to stardom, Maphuma has maintained that he doesn’t feel obligated to take photos with every fan. Speaking on L-Tido’s podcast recently, the musician stood by his stance.
“No one forced me to be a celebrity. I make music for the people. If I don’t feel like taking a picture, then I don’t feel like it,” he explained.
“I don’t owe it to anyone. No one got me to where I am, and no one can take anything away from me except God.”
Maphuma argued that, as a celebrity, he doesn’t feel entitled and he doesn’t understand why some fans behave as if they are.
“If you don’t want to listen to my music, that’s okay. No one owes anyone anything in life. I understand that it’s just a picture, but the problem is when I’m at the mall minding my own business and someone wants to take a picture.”
The musician also opened up about recently losing his grandfather.
“My grandad passed away recently, and I couldn’t even go out to buy a T-shirt because people would approach me for photos. Will they understand that I’m not in the right headspace?”
He also addressed the challenges of being expected to take photos with fans, even when he’s late for performances.
“Sometimes you get to a gig and you’re already running late. I don’t have time to take pictures because if I stop for one, I’ll have to take pictures with everyone. Then the next day, people accuse me of being unprofessional.”
