The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has reportedly resolved to request the South African Football Association (SAFA) to promote three teams from the ABC Motsepe League at the conclusion of the current season, according to sources within SABC Sport.
This decision effectively quashes recent speculation suggesting an expansion of the Betway Premiership to 18 clubs in the wake of the unprecedented cancellation of Royal AM’s PSL membership earlier this month.
The PSL’s Board of Governors (BOG) finalised the contentious Royal AM saga during a meeting on Thursday, reaffirming their earlier overwhelming vote to terminate the Durban-based club’s professional status, which entails expunging all its accumulated points.
While the removal of Royal AM creates a void in the top-flight league for the upcoming season, the PSL’s proposed solution lies within the amateur ranks.
The league will reportedly formally approach SAFA to elevate three teams from the ABC Motsepe League, the third tier of South African football, to fill this gap.
With Royal AM no longer part of the professional structure, the PSL now requires three additional teams to be promoted from the ABC Motsepe League to ensure the integrity and competitiveness of both the Championship and the Premiership in the upcoming 2024-26 campaign.
