The controversial, privately managed G4S Mangaung Correctional Centre in the Free State has suspended seven of its prison officials in response to the murder of inmate Mpho Mkhumbeni.
Mkhumbeni died on 12 March after he was pepper-sprayed and beaten during an unauthorised raid on his cell the night before.
The Department of Correctional Services has stated it is closely monitoring the situation within the privately-run facility following these disturbing revelations.
A formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mkhumbeni’s death is expected to be launched imminently, seeking to determine the precise sequence of events and accountability for the “unnatural” causes identified.
This incident raises serious concerns about the treatment of inmates within the Mangaung Correctional Centre and will likely prompt scrutiny of the facility’s operational procedures and the use of force. The impending investigation will be crucial in establishing the facts and ensuring transparency in this sensitive matter.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Department of Correctional Services Spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo on the latest developments.
