The South African Police Service (SAPS) has rescued two businessmen just hours after they were hijacked and kidnapped in Midrand, Gauteng. The swift operation, conducted by the specialised Anti-Kidnapping Task Team on Monday, underscores the police’s expertise in handling such critical incidents.
According to a statement released by the SAPS on Tuesday, the two men were targeted at a car rental company premises by a group of criminals driving a silver/grey Hyundai i10. The victims were subsequently taken to a secluded area in the bushes along the R21 highway, where they were forced to divulge their bank card PINs.
Exploiting this information, the kidnappers proceeded to withdraw significant amounts of money from the businessmen’s accounts. However, their criminal activities were quickly detected, triggering an immediate and coordinated response from law enforcement.
“A multidisciplinary team led by the SAPS Anti-Kidnapping Task Team were alerted and immediately mobilised,” the SAPS confirmed.
Their prompt action led to the successful location and rescue of the two male victims, who were found in dense bushes.
Furthermore, the victims’ hijacked SUV Range Rover was later recovered in Tembisa.
The SAPS utilized this successful operation to reassure the public of their capabilities in dealing with kidnapping cases.
“The SAPS would like to assure the nation that it has the necessary expertise to rescue victims of kidnappings and urge friends, family and bystanders to immediately alert the SAPS when they become aware of any crime, including an active kidnapping,” the statement emphasised.
The SAPS also commended the collaborative effort of various units involved in the swift rescue.
“The SAPS applauds the teams involved in this operation which include the National Crime Intelligence Counter and Security Team, Police Emergency Services, SAPS Flying Squad, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing and Vision Tactical Security Company,” the statement acknowledged.
Meanwhile, a manhunt is currently underway for the perpetrators who managed to evade arrest. Authorities believe the suspects are continuing to use the silver/grey Hyundai i10 in their criminal activities. The SAPS has urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward and contact the police.
