Thobile Ngcamphalala has become the second Black South African woman in Rhodes University’s 120-year history to graduate with a Master’s degree in Topology with Distinction.
Her achievement not only marks personal academic excellence, but also stands as a historic milestone at the institution.
Thobile graduated with a Master’s degree in Pure Mathematics with Distinction, after completing her studies in just one year.
She began her academic journey through the Extended Curriculum Programme, a pathway designed to support students who may need additional time due to various educational gaps.
She went on to earn a BSc (Hons) in Pure Mathematics with Distinction, followed by her Master’s degree—a feat made even more impressive by her distinction in one of the most underrepresented fields for Black South African women: Pure Mathematics.
Her research paper was published in Applied General Topology, a DHET-accredited journal, with her listed as first author—another significant accomplishment to her name.
Speaking about her success, her Master’s supervisor, Dr Mbekezeli Nxumalo, reflected:
“Thobile’s story is one of perseverance, courage, and brilliance. She set her own pace and broke new ground. It was a privilege to walk beside her through this journey.”
Her achievement was formally recognised at #RUGrad2025. Thobile now plans to pursue a PhD in Pure Mathematics later this year.
