Rugby fans and the sporting world are witnessing a significant shift in the sponsorship landscape of South African rugby, as telecommunications giant MTN has announced it will be stepping down as the lead sponsor of the Springboks.
The long-standing partnership, which has been a prominent feature of the national team’s jerseys for many years, will come to an end.
First National Bank (FNB) has been confirmed as the new lead sponsor. The FNB logo will move from the shoulders to the chest of all national teams’ playing jerseys.
The financial institution, with a strong presence in the South African market, will take over the prominent branding position on the iconic green and gold jersey.
While the details of the sponsorship agreement are yet to be fully disclosed, the transition marks a notable change in the Springboks’ financial backing.
MTN has been a consistent and visible supporter of the national team, and their departure will be felt by many.
FNB’s move to become the lead sponsor underscores their commitment to supporting South African sport and aligning their brand with the national pride and success associated with the Springboks.
The partnership is expected to be a significant boost for both the team and the bank, offering extensive brand visibility and association with a globally recognised sporting powerhouse.
“It’s a very exciting day for us and an absolute honor partnering with a brand of this nature. The team has made us proud on global stages as South Africa. We have been a partner with South African Rugby since before 2017, and this relationship has now really been deepened, in terms of us coming in front of the jersey. It has certainly been of great value with the nature of the engagements and partnerships we have with South African Rugby,” said Faye Mfikwe, Chief Marketing Officer of FNB.
Kaya Biz with Gugulethu Mfuphi spoke to both Charles Molapisi – CEO of MTN SA and Faye Mfikwe, Chief Marketing Officer of FNB, who reflected on the sponsorship.
