The intersection of North 59th Street and Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia now bears a new name, a testament to one of the city’s most celebrated figures.
In a special ceremony held on Wednesday, 26 March, the 2000 block of North 59th Street was officially renamed Will Smith Way in honor of the iconic actor and musician.
City officials, who passed a resolution for the renaming on 6 March, expressed their pride in recognising a ‘hometown superstar’ and the lasting impact Will Smith has made on Philadelphia.
The event was well-attended, with Smith himself present to witness the unveiling of the street sign.
During the ceremony, Smith reflected on his upbringing in West Philadelphia and the values instilled in him by the community. “That was one of the things these streets of Philadelphia taught me, that there’s nothing wrong for a hard day’s work,” Smith shared, emphasising the strong work ethic he learned growing up in the city.
The Oscar and Grammy-winning artist also took the opportunity to announce the upcoming release of his fifth studio album, titled “Based on a True Story,” later this week.
This marks his first music project in two decades, and Smith revealed that the album was inspired by a period of self-reflection. He further disclosed plans to release a total of three albums this year, with some of the tracks drawing inspiration from life lessons.
