A scene of carnage unfolded at a busy Doornfontein taxi rank on Thursday morning, 20 March 2025, as a group of armed men opened fire leaving four people dead and three others critically injured.
The incident, which occurred within the Jeppe policing precinct, has sent shockwaves through the community.
Police suspect the brutal attack is linked to ongoing taxi violence in the region.
The Provincial Taxi Violence Unit has reportedly taken over the investigation, and detectives are working to gather evidence and identify the perpetrators.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of commuters and the prevalence of taxi-related violence in Johannesburg.
The taxi rank, a vital transport hub for residents and students, is now a crime scene, cordoned off as investigators work to piece together the events of the morning.
“Around 7 o’clock this morning, it was reported that a group of six men who were driving a blue polo VW came to this rank in Doornfontein and started shooting at the people, and it was later discovered that four people were dead. Out of the four people, one of them is a taxi driver. the other a queue marshal the other two were hawkers who were selling in the taxi rank. Three more people were also reported to be injured. and taken to the hospital,” a spokesperson for the South African Police Service said.
