Fertile Ground Studio’s upcoming dystopian thriller, I Am King, will debut at this year’s Johannesburg Film Festival.
The film, featuring a cast including Sisanda Henna, Nambitha Ben-Mazwi, Nthathi Moshesh, and Florence Masebe, examines issues such as systemic division, institutional corruption, and cultural identity across the continent.
Set against a reimagined present-day Africa, I Am King weaves historical context and African spirituality into its storyline, with a particular focus on healthcare struggles through the fictional entity Afrika Pharmaceuticals.
The plot interrogates paradoxes central to modern Africa: a wealth of resources and cultural heritage contrasted with persistent fragmentation and inequality.
Director and Fertile Ground Studio representatives describe the project as an attempt to balance entertainment with critical reflection.
“Africa’s challenges—corruption, identity crises, and division—are layered and deeply rooted,” the studio noted. “This film asks audiences to consider how we arrived here, despite our shared history and potential.”
The Johannesburg Film Festival, known for showcasing bold storytelling, will host the premiere.
