The Vatican announced on Tuesday that Pope Francis has pneumonia in both lungs.
This follows fresh tests that revealed an additional problem in the 88-year-old pope’s health that prompted questions about his capacity to combat the infection.
Following a worsening of a week-long attack of bronchitis, Francis was hospitalised in Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday in a “fair” condition.
Medical professionals diagnosed him with a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection on Monday, which means that a variety of bacteria, viruses, and potentially other organisms have colonised his respiratory tract.
According to the Vatican, Francis’ respiratory condition also includes asthmatic bronchitis, which calls for the use of corticosteroid antibiotics.
“Laboratory tests, chest X-ray, and the Holy Father’s clinical condition continue to present a complex picture.
“A follow-up chest CT scan, to which the Holy Father was subjected this afternoon—prescribed by the Vatican medical team and the medical staff of the “A. Gemelli” Polyclinic Foundation—, “revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, requiring additional pharmacological therapy.
“Nevertheless, Pope Francis remains in good spirits.” the Vatican said.
