The number of persons who perished on the country’s roads during the festive season has increased by 5.3% from the previous year.
This means that 1 502 persons died during the period in question with a staggering 41% of deaths being pedestrians. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced the latest traffic mortality data on Monday afternoon.
According to Creecy, six provinces saw a rise in the number of fatalities during the 2024/25 festive season compared to the 2023/24 season: KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Limpopo, the Northern Cape and the North West.
In Limpopo, there were 140 crashes that killed 180 people, 118 crashes that killed 143 people in Mpumalanga and 140 people were killed in 124 crashes in the Western Cape.
In the Free State, 106 people were killed in 81 collisions, while 87 crashes killed 100 people in the North West.
KwaZulu-Natal had the largest number of fatalities with 304 people killed in 247 crashes. In Gauteng, 235 people died in 224 collisions, whereas in the Eastern Cape 231 people died in 168 crashes.
