The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) have arrested a 21-year-old suspect in connection with leaking the matric class of 2024 exam results on the internet.
The SAPS (South African Police Services) reports that the male suspect was arrested on Thursday morning at a house in Hillcrest, Johannesburg where he lives with his parents.
“This morning, 16 January 2025, the Hawks’ Serious Economic Offences Unit of the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, Cybercrime Investigation Head Office descended upon a house in Hillcrest, north of Johannesburg after their search and seizure warrant was approved. The Hawks proceeded to the identified premises where a 21 years old young man and his parents are residing,” said the SAPS in a statement.
According to reports, the suspect has also been detained for the unlawful possession of a firearm as electronic gadgets were found along with an unlicensed shotgun with live ammunition.
This follows an investigation launched by the Department of Basic Education into a breach after it emerged that a website was selling National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric results for R100 online.
On 12 January, anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee alerted Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube about the website which has now been identified as Edumarks, a website which has been operating since 2021.
Abramjee has confirmed that a director of Edumarks was also arrested by the police yesterday.
