Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement to halt combat in Gaza and exchange Israeli captives for Palestinian inmates, an official briefed on the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.
This is set to pave the way for an end to a 15-month war that has upended the Middle East.
According to reports, the accord has come shortly before US President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration on the 20th of January, following months of on-and-off negotiations led by Egyptian and Qatari mediators with US assistance.
The agreement will also reportedly lead to the release of hostages, providing relief to families who have been waiting eagerly for their loved ones to return.
Furthermore, the Gaza restoration plan will be critical to restoring the war-torn territory and assisting citizens in their recovery.
In response to the recent ceasefire deal, South Africa has welcomed the agreement as a step towards ending the violence and bringing relief to the affected populations.
“South Africa welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas after 15 months of Israel’s genocidal onslaught on Gaza after Hamas and other armed groups launched an attack on Israel,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said on Wednesday evening.
