Former Springboks coach and GOOD Party member, Peter de Villiers, has joined Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
De Villiers (67) was the national rugby team’s coach from 2008 to 2011, winning the 2009 Tri Nations, a 2009 test series triumph over the British and Irish Lions, and a first victory over New Zealand in Dunedin in 2009, after success with the South African U19 and U21 sides.
De Villiers, who is a former mayoral candidate and member of the Western Cape provincial assembly in Patricia de Lille’s Good Party, was kicked out of the party in March last year following a sexual misconduct accusation from a member.
The MK Party has been on an extensive recruitment spree in the past couple of months. The party recently announced that former EFF chair Dali Mpofu has joined.
Other prominent figures who have been unveiled as new members of the MK Party include Uyajola 9/9 presenter Jub Jub, musician Papa Penny, former ANC leader and KZN Premier Willies Mchunu and former EFF MP Busisiwe Mkhwebane.
In a video that has been widely shared on social media, Peter de Villiers is seen giving a speech while wearing MK Party regalia.
“As soon as a coach announces the Springbok team, that’s not the biggest moment. The biggest moment is for them to go out there, and for them to win the game. And what we’ve received here today, is an endorsement and trust that we will go out there and do our best in life and death,” said De Villiers.
