Kwaito legend Doc Shebeleza has passed away in hospital at the age of 51 after a long illness, his family representative has confirmed.
The iconic artist, whose real name is Victor Bogopane, was hospitalised in June 2024 due to a health issue. Doc Shebeleza’s manager, Shakes Mavundla confirmed the news of his passing on Thursday.
“Doc Shebeleza passed away on Thursday morning around 10:30am after being discharged from hospital on Monday,” said Mavundla.
Born on 22 March 1970 in Soweto, Johannesburg, Doc Shebeleza rose to prominence in the 1990s with his distinct voice and commanding stage presence.
Many South Africans regard his hit songs Ghets Ghetsa, S’kumfete, and Ebumnandini as anthems of their youth.
His music often addressed social issues and celebrated township life, solidifying his status as a beloved figure in the South African music industry.
