The FIFA World Cup, the biggest sporting event in the world, will take place in Saudi Arabia in 2034, the sport’s governing body said Wednesday. Human rights organizations have already criticized this decision.
The announcement on Wednesday was merely a formality because Saudi Arabia’s application was the only one submitted for the 2034 event.

There are 15 stadiums in Saudi Arabia, eight of which are still under construction, spread over five cities: four in Jeddah, eight in the capital Riyadh, and one each in Abha, Al Khobar, and Neom.
At least 40,000 people are expected to attend each venue. A 92,000-seat facility in Riyadh is scheduled to host the tournament’s opening and final.
The stadium near Riyadh is intended to be situated atop a 200-meter cliff with a retractable wall of LED displays, while the stadium in Neom is situated 350 meters above street level.
