In relationships, it is important to consider what your partner might really be feeling before making a decision to buy anything for their close friends. It’s wise to also look at your relationship dynamics, the specific situation, and your partner’s feelings before making such decisions.
This is what Anonymous is concerned about, as his guy friend went ahead and succumbed to his partner’s bestie’s request to buy her a bag while they were shopping. Anonymous wanted to confirm if there was merit to her suspicion that this was not a wise move.
Uncle T, my guy friend, struggles to read the room. He is in a relationship with a sweet and down-to-earth woman. This weekend, he went out with his girlfriend for lunch, and the girlfriend’s friend joined them. These two girls are tight; they go to the gym together and are besties. After lunch, they did some window shopping.
His girlfriend wanted to buy a gym bag, and my guy friend, being the generous person that he is, offered to buy it for her. Her bestie said she liked the bag, too, and he also offered to buy it for her. He is proud to have done so for both ladies. When I asked why he did that, he said it wasn’t expensive. He felt it was a nice gesture to extend it to his friend. I immediately saw a yellow flag.
His generosity blinded him to read the room. From my view, his sweet woman was thrown in a corner, and there was no way she could have shown her disdain even when his gesture made her uncomfortable. Knowing how we are as women and how soft it makes us feel inside when a man caters to us, I don’t think Umngani Wam’ is aware of the can of worms he just opened. He failed to ring-fence his woman from the bestie.
This bestie might be the downfall of their relationship. He doesn’t see it. I asked him to ask his woman how it made her feel. The response he got was, “It was cool.” Yellow flag !! She’s being agreeable. It is like a woman saying she’s fine. Am I wrong?
