A significant law has been introduced in Colombia to defend Colombian children’s and teenagers’ rights.
Colombia has officially banned child marriage without exceptions, after the Senate passed the legislation on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.
There has been a 17-year campaign to ban child marriage in Colombia.
According to UNICEF 23% of girls get married before turning 18 and 5% before turning 15, child marriage has been a major problem in Colombia.
In rural places, where poverty and traditional practices sometimes lead to early marriages, this practice is increasingly common.
In terms of the number of teenagers who marry or enter into early relationships before the age of 15, Colombia is ranked 20th worldwide and 11th in Latin America and the Caribbean.
