President Cyril Ramaphosa has joined other foreign leaders in congratulating Donald Trump on his election as the 47th president of the United States.
Trump’s election marks a historic and improbable comeback for the former president, who left office in 2021 after failing to overturn the 2020 election results.
Trump is the second president to win two nonconsecutive White House terms. Trump’s win denies Kamala Harris, the vice president, the chance of becoming the first woman U.S. president.
The US, which will take over as the next chair of the global forum in 2026 after Pretoria, will collaborate closely with South Africa when it assumes the G20 Presidency, according to President Ramaphosa.
“Congratulations to United States President-Elect @realDonaldTrump on your return to the Presidency. I look forward to continuing the close and mutually beneficial partnership between our two nations across all domains of our cooperation. In the global arena, we look forward to our Presidency of the G20 in 2025, where we will work closely with the US who will succeed us in the G20 Presidency in 2026.” wrote Ramaphosa,
