On Monday, Google, a division of Alphabet, announced that it had inked the first corporate contract in history to purchase electricity from several tiny modular reactors in order to meet the demand for AI.
According to Fortune Magazine, Google’s deal with Kairos Power, the first small modular reactor built by Kairos will go online by 2030, with other deployments scheduled to begin by 2035.
Google did not disclose the agreement’s financial terms or the location of the plants’ construction in the US. Google stated that it had consented to purchase 500MW of power, which is less than what nuclear reactors produce now, from six to seven reactors.

“This agreement helps accelerate a new technology to meet energy needs cleanly and reliably, and unlock the full potential of AI for everyone.” Michael Terrell, the senior director of energy and climate at Google, said in a blog post.
