One person was found dead following a fire that broke out on Tuesday at the Broadwalk Urban Village complex in Midrand, Johannesburg.
Rescue teams discovered the body submerged under rubble and a collapsed roof from the previous night.
Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Xolile Khumalo confirmed that the body of a 33-year-old woman was found beneath the fallen ceiling in the apartment where the fire is believed to have started.
Khumalo added that investigations are ongoing, and it is too early to speculate on the cause of the fire. The building’s compliance with safety regulations will also be examined.
The fire destroyed over 130 apartments.
