Renowned South African actress Florence Masebe recently shared the terrifying story of a shooting incident in 1999 that nearly took her life.
Back then, Florence was working night shifts as a presenter. She still can’t say for sure how many bullets hit her, but she believes it was more than 40.
“My body took quite several bullets. The medical team and I always spoke 40 times and more. I know the media ran with 26 bullets at the time. People had a chance to shoot me at close range.”
In a recent podcast interview, Masebe admitted that she still doesn’t know why she was targeted. Despite the trauma, she’s grateful that the incident didn’t stop her from living a fulfilling life.
“I am thankful for that thing till today. Having lived, It became very clear that my focus was going to be on staying alive. Then asking, who could’ve done this? If focused on anything else I would’ve lost myself.
Recalling the terrifying experience, Florence remembered driving home one night when multiple people started shooting at her.
“As I turned into my street, there was one that drove right past, and another one looked like they were about to U-turn.
“It was a hail storm, and more than one person was shooting. It was just fireworks. There is a sound that bullets make when they go through your bone, and I hate the fact that I know that.”
The former Muvhango actress revealed that in the past, she was hesitant to because of fear,
“I’m happy I’m where I am now. It was a horrific time. I can’t think about it and not be in awe of what has happened.”
She also revealed that in the past, fear held her back, but now she’s grateful for where she is in life.
“She didn’t want to wait for an ambulance. I just wanted to sleep. It was very clear if I just closed my eyes. I was in so much pain and no amount of pain medication was going to help me. I was cold. My temperature was dropping and they kept me alive.”
When she arrived at the hospital, Florence overheard doctors struggling to find a team to save her life. But thankfully, one doctor stepped in and saved her.
“That man goodness bless him,” she said.
