An unlawful military firearm training camp in White River in Limpopo, was recently raided by the South African Police Service (SAPS).
On August 8, 2024, SAPS members from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Public Order Policing (POP), the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), a Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Modimolle Vispol raided a suspected firearm training facility in Modimolle. Although no arrests have been made, SAPS has recovered multiple licensed firearms and ammunition, and an investigation is ongoing.
According to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, the discovery of a facility possibly used for military-related handgun training on a farm in Modimolle, Limpopo, raises “serious concerns”.
He further said, “The swift and coordinated response by these specialised units showcases the commitment and diligence of our law enforcement agencies in protecting our communities from potential threats. While no arrests have been made at this time, the authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice.”
Phemelo discusses with Ian Cameron, Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Police what led to the operation.
