The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng said there is no justification for the tragic and senseless killing of fighter, Moshe Mphahlele.
Mphahlele, the EFF Regional Deputy Secretary was shot and killed allegedly by state security officials on Sunday, 04 August.
The incident occurred in Alexandra during a service delivery protest for social housing, during which Mphahlele was shot in the crossfire, as police fired shots to disperse the crowds.
In the process, community members were also wounded, among them a teenager who is currently in critical condition in hospital.
Mphahlele was mediating between the homeless community members and government officials to address the matter.
In a statement by EFF in Gauteng, the party has condemned the use of live ammunition during what they called a calm and non-violent protest.
“During this peaceful engagement, Fighter Mphahlele was fatally shot with live ammunition by reckless and irresponsible security agencies.
It is important to highlight that the security agencies had no justification for using live ammunition, as the situation was calm and non-violent.
Even more alarming is that this reckless shooting occurred in the presence of state security agencies who are supposed to know best how to handle such matters and resolve them peacefully.”
Mphahlele was described as a dedicated community activist who committed his life to improving the living conditions of the people of Johannesburg and Alexandra.
The EFF in Gauteng say they are monitoring the situation and ongoing developments in regarding Fighter Moshe Mphahlele’s death.
