A veld fire that broke out in the uMgeni local municipality’s Mpophomeni Boston region in KwaZulu-Natal has claimed the lives of 6 firefighters, taking the death toll to 13.
On Monday COGTA MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi visited the affected area along with various departments across the government.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke Nonala Ndlovu – KZN COGTA Spokesperson on relief efforts for the area. She spoke about how there have been several fires that have ravaged the province in the last few weeks that have affected numerous communities.
“It is difficult to say how widely the fire spread because there have been different fires throughout the province with the latest fire being in the Boston region, there were other fires in other areas, with almost all the districts in the province affected.”
Ndlovu shared that victims of the fire need all the assistance they can get from the public.
“People need clothing, building materials and food, today we visited the area in Durban, where several shacks where burnt to the ground, and the people in that community lost almost everything that they had. The municipality and the government are trying to put together any assistance that they can.”
