The urgent request from the Balobedu Royal Council to stop the DStv series Queen Modjadji from airing was dismissed by the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday.
Queen Modjadji is based on the story of the Rain Queen, an innate ruler of Balobedu. It was believed that the Rain Queen could control the clouds and the amount of rain.
This comes after the Balobedu Royal family and council sued Multichoice in court to prevent the premiere and airing of the Queen Modjadji drama series, which was scheduled to air on Mzansi Magic. They claimed that the show’s airing would marginalize and damage the culture of the Balobedu people.
Multichoice has welcomed the ruling by the Pretoria High Court.
“MultiChoice welcomes the ruling from the Pretoria High Court dismissing the urgent application by the Balobedu Royal Council to stop the broadcast of the Queen Modjadji series. We undertook the necessary protocols and extensive consultations with cultural experts as part of the production process. The production of Queen Modjadji plays a pivotal role as it impacts the economy, job creation and livelihoods within the industry.
“The story is inspired by the Balobedu legendary rainmaker, the first Queen Modjadji, and we are excited for our customers to go on the journey of this thoroughly researched African story. Viewers can look forward to the local historical drama series from this Sunday, 14 July, at 20:00 on channel 161, Mzansi Magic.”
