“I promise to run every day, you cannot have an overweight Minister of Sports!” This was newly appointed Minister of Sport, Arts & Culure, Gayton Mckenzie’s vow to South Africans after being sworn into the Government of National Unity (GNU) Cabinet.
On Wednesday, 03 July the Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader was sworn in as a Minister of Parliament as the African National Congress (ANC) shares power for the first time in 30-years.
While Mckenzie was vying for the role as Minister of Home Affairs, he has already begun running in an attempt to shed some weight so he can “fit” into his portfolio as Minister of Sport.
Mckenzie responded to a social media user, saying the country cannot have an overweight Minister of Sport and that he would need to “look like his job.”
Former Minister of Sport, Arts & Culture, Zizi Kodwa resigned from the role after being implicated in a R1.6 million corruption case.
Kodwa handed over to Gayton Mckenzie on Tuesday, and the PA leader was eager to take over.
I did my first run from the parking lot to the airport gate because I was late this morning. I promise to join @tumisole & friends from next week to run everyday. You cant have such an overweight Minister of Sports, Arts & Culture. I must look like my job. https://t.co/NPpBIBwvev

Apart from vowing to lose weight, Mckenzie has promised to make car spinning a recognised sport in the country. His reasons are to not only elevate the sport, but to keep young people out of jail.
“There is one promise I made; spinning and stance are not crimes, you will see. I promise that spinning will be recognised. I will make spinning one of the biggest sports in this country. Stance is not a crime. Spinning will enter its rightful space.
We will work hard. I will be one of the best ministers because I have you guys. We will stop gangsterism with sports. I will make sure you are recognised.”
