The Councl for Geosciences has confirmed that a magnitude 3 tremor occurred in Johannesburg on Saturday night, 29 June.
While this is only preliminary information, the Council’s spokesperson, Mahlatse Mononela said seismologists will analyze the data from the potential seismic activity.
“We can confirm that a 2.3 magnitude earth tremor occurred at around 18h26 this evening in JHB South. It was followed by an aftershock that was felt at least 3.9km from the epicentre measuring 1.6 magnitude.”
Earthquake Track noted the seismic activity was recorded at 20h25 but could not determine the depth of the activity.
The tremor was felt in Midrand, Roodepoort, Weltevreden Park, Auckland Park, Kensington, Turffontein and Soweto.
No casualties, injuries or damages have been reported yet.
It is unclear if the tremor was due to illegal mining activities at this stage.
