The Proteas T20 World Cup dreams were shattered by India on Saturday, 29 June at the Kensington Oval Stadium in Barbados.
India won by 7 runs, claiming the title, after a spectacular catch by Suryakumar Yadav dismissed David Miller.
Both teams went into the match with unbeaten streaks but India held their composure, and a 76 run innings by Virat Kohli helped take India to victory.
India won the toss and elected to bat in what was an exciting clash of the titans.
Proteas Captain Aiden Markram said the gut-wrenching loss stings, but it’s needed to fuel fire in the team’s bellies for next time.
“It’s just gut-wrenching. There are moments we could have done better but all in all we’re still proud of the performance we put together today.
In a final to get close like that is something we can still be proud of. It’s tough, this group’s a great bunch of people and in my opinion deserve really good things their way.
I had a really good feeling about this competition before we came here and as the competition went on that feeling got stronger and stronger. It’s pretty tough to deal with now but it’s sport and at the end of the day someone’s going to win and someone’s going to lose.
We’ll use this to fire us up for future events.”
Markram was the first Proteas Captain to qualify for the World Cup final.
