Former DA Federal Council chairperson, James Selfe has passed away at 68
James Selfe, the DA’s former federal council chair, passed away at the age of 68.
The party said that Selfe passed away on Tuesday afternoon. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Selfe began his career in politics as a researcher for the Progressive Federal Party, which would eventually merge with the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Throughout his nearly three decades in the legislature, he served on a number of portfolio committees, the most notable of which was on justice and correctional services. Selfe made a significant contribution to South African democracy and led a quietly prominent life in the country’s modern political history, according to a statement released by the party’s head, John Steenhuisen.
The DA mourns the passing of party stalwart, James Selfe who was an unsung hero of our democracy and a pioneer in South African opposition politics. James was the party’s first FedCo chairperson and pioneered its lawfare programme. Fare thee well, James. Thank you for everything. pic.twitter.com/MZ6dN9dTL0
