Rubbish lines the streets of Joburg CBD as casual workers cause a disruption to Pikitup services in the city.
According to Pikitup, workers whose contracts are about to expire have halted services and are protesting forcefully, demanding jobs from the waste management company.
In a statement, Pikitup said areas that are affected include Norwood, Marlboro, Waterval, Selby, Randburg, Midrand and Diepsloot.
Casual workers in the above areas, together with some community members are preventing Pikitup employees from servicing residents. Some workers have resorted to burning tires outside some of the depots.
“Pikitup management is actively exploring various options to normalise the situation and restore service delivery in the affected areas.
Efforts include engaging with protesting casual workers to find amicable solutions and deploying security measures that will enable employees to leave the depots to service the community.
A recovery plan is also being devised to ensure that the waste collection backlogs that will be occasioned by the present situation are addressed speedily.”
Pikitup says they are in talks with the casual workers and that they are exploring other options to collect refuse.
