Nigerian government has approved the death penalty for drug dealers.
A law to impose the death penalty on anybody found guilty of trafficking in or using hard drugs and narcotics was approved by the Senate on Thursday.
This follows a presentation by Borno North Senator Tahir Monguno of a report on behalf of the joint committees on judiciary and drugs and narcotics.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act (Amendment Bill) 2024 was approved by the Committee of the Whole with the support of the majority of senators.
According to Reuters, Nigeria has in recent years gone from being a transit point for illegal drugs to a full-blown producer, consumer and distributor.
The NDLEA Act’s Section 11, states that anyone who imports, manufactures, produces, processes, plants, or grows drugs commonly known as cocaine, heroin, or any other similar drug without a valid permit is guilty of an offense and faces a life sentence if found guilty.
This section was amended by the bill. The death sentence was added to the provision as a punishment for anyone found guilty of the offenses.
