Dingaan “The Rose of Soweto” Thobela, a beloved figure among South African sports fans and a former world boxing champion, is being held at the Dlamini Multipurpose Centre in Soweto, south of Johannesburg. Thobela became unwell and passed away last Monday at the age of 57.
As a professional boxer, Thobela was a formidable force between 1990 and 2006. Having held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) lightweight title from 1990 to 1992, the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight title in 1993, and the World Boxing Council (WBC) super-middleweight title in 2000, he was a two-time world champion in different weight classes.
