The Gauteng Department of Education (DOE) has launched an investigation into the Glenvista High School fight between a teacher and a learner.
A video clip of a teacher at the school and a pupil involved in a physical altercation went viral on Friday, 03 May.
In the video, a Grade 9 male learner and a teacher can be seen violently fighting, with chairs and tables being thrown at one another.
The teacher can be seen physically assaulting the learner multiple times before being pushed to the ground by another learner who intervened.
In a statement, Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane expressed his concern at incident and confirmed an investigation is underway to ascertain details.
“According to information at our disposal, the incident took place on Thursday, 02 May. A video of the incident was captured and it shows an educator and a learner fighting violently in class, damaging school furniture in the process.
We take this matter seriously. The safety of everyone on premises of schools remains our utmost priority. However, such ill-discipline will not be tolerated. Schools are for development, not any other nefarious deeds.
As such, we are investigating the circumstances surrounding this inciden and we will act decisively on our findings.”
