PSL outfit Kaizer Chiefs have retired jersey No. 26 in honour of the slain Luke Fleurs.
Fleurs tragically lost his life on April 3 during a hijacking incident in Honeydew, Johannesburg.
During the Fleurs memorial service last week, Kaizer Chiefs announced their decision to retire jersey No. 26 to honour the player.
“Today, we gathered to honour the beautiful life of Luke Fleurs. Your laughter, kindness, and spirit will forever be cherished. Jersey #26 has been officially retired by the club. Rest in peace.”
According to reports, the 24-year-old was in a red VW GTI while waiting to be attended to at a filling station on 14th Avenue when he was confronted by two armed men. The suspects, who were driving a white BMW 1 Series, pointed a firearm at Fleurs, forcing him out of his vehicle before shooting him once on the upper body.
One suspect drove off with Fleurs’ vehicle, while the accomplice followed in the BMW. Fleurs was taken to the nearest medical facility but was certified dead.
