The South African Police Service has issued a warning to the public about criminals who are exploiting Facebook Marketplace to rob their victims.
This warning comes off the back of two brothers in the Eastern Cape who were murdered after falling victim to a false Facebook Marketplace advertisement last weekend.
The 959 Breakfast team highlighted the dangers of buying products online, with Sol Phenduka sharing some tips from his successful experiences with online purchases and T-Bose sharing his bad personal experience.
The Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit in Gqeberha is investigating two cases of murder.
The police are warning the public that a heinous act such as this serves as a blatant reminder of the dangers associated with online transactions.
“We urge the public to exercise caution and diligence when using social media platforms to make purchases. Verify the credibility of sellers, conduct transactions in safe locations, and consider involving law enforcement if there are any suspicions. We appeal to anyone who can assist us in tracing these cold and callous perpetrators to contact D/Capt Monde Sithole on 082 457 2812, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or the nearest police station. All information is confidential, and callers may remain anonymous.”
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata, is advising the public to “never tread on unfamiliar territory.”
This is not the first time that people have fallen victim to such scams; however, this is the first time that lives have been lost.
“We are urging people to report to the police station and request police to accompany them instead of going on your own. There are hotspot danger zones that should be avoided. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time. We are committed to pursuing justice for the victims and ensuring the safety of our community.’”
