Nathi Nhleko, a former member of the African National Congress (ANC) NEC and minister of police, has resigned from the liberation movement.
Nhleko, who joined the ANC as a young man in the 1970s, announced his departure from the party on Monday.
Nhleko complained in a seven-page letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa and ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula about Mbalula’s claim that he was sweating and referred to a swimming pool as a “fire pool” during the probe into former President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home.

He also said that he no longer recognizes the ANC he joined.
“In the past few years, I have observed that I no longer recognise this ANC that I joined, the ANC whose only aspiration was to liberate our people. The ANC as a liberation movement spoke and acted strongly on good ethics; a collective approach; was people focused; and emphasised on humanity and freedom for all.”
He also commented on Mbalula’s recent remarks about Nkandla stating how “the bankruptcy, lunacy, and the defunct manner of thinking by the Secretary-General, which has unfortunately defined the barren form the ANC has undertaken”.
“In the recent attack mounted against my person, by a Mr Fikile Mbalula, a Secretary-General of the ANC; about what he called ‘my sweating’, ‘the firepool narrative’ and what he called were ‘lies to protect the former president. He closed his attack by stating that people lost their careers because of this thing”
