The City of Johannesburg ordered to reinstate 130 fired workers.
The City of Johannesburg has stated that it will abide by the ruling of the Gauteng High Court, which mandates the reinstatement of 130 employees.
On the 1st of March, Gauteng High Court overturned the decision of the DA coalition in the City of Johannesburg to dismiss 130 employees as unlawful and illegal.
The issue began in February 2022, when more than a hundred workers whose fixed-term contracts were converted to permanent ones were abruptly fired by the newly elected city leadership without prior notice.
At the time, the DA-led multiparty coalition claimed that the previous ANC government had broken the law egregiously by providing permanent jobs to its political staff. Phalatse stated at the time that the ANC, led by the late mayor Geoff Makhubo, changed the fixed-term contracts into permanent employment.
