Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema gives a more detailed “Point of View” of his party’s manifesto in the build-up to the elections in May 2024.
Joining Phemelo Motene in-studio, Malema questioned the need for provincial MECs, saying their roles are unnecessary and simply costing the country too much.
“We are wasting money, a lot of it. There’s something called Deputy Ministers who no one knows, even when these ministers go overseas, the Deputy Minister is not allowed to act because he’s not a member of cabinet.
They’re paid a lot of money, houses, cars in Pretoria and Cape Town, that’s a waste of money. But, equally why do you need provincial premiers, why do need MECs, why do you need provincial legislatures?
For example the Limpopo legislature, the day they meet it becomes Christmas, everybody must know they are meeting. But, in Parliament, we meet every day, legislatures don’t meet every day.
Yet they get paid a lot of money. MECs, premiers, you don’t need these provinces, for what? We need to build a unitary state. From the provincial monies itself, we’ll be saving a lot of resources and if someone says what happens to these workers? They will still have their roles there, but it will be redefined.
Those that do not add value because they were cadre deployment, which there’s nothing wrong with cadre deployment by the way, but the problem with the ANC that they don’t consider qualifications.
It considers logineering, who can sing the loudest? I supported you as Mayor, you are going to make me head of Technical Services, but my qualification is a History teacher.”
