“Cape Town stinks!” This was the first tweet of several Capetonians on Monday, 19 February who were gagging over the pungent stench wafting over the city.
The smell which was traced to a livestock cargo ship which had docked in the Cape Town harbour on Sunday night.
Carrying 19 000 livestock, the smell emanating from the vessel which is sailing from Brazil to Iraq has been described as, “a sewage that’s blocked and decided to explode, mixed with the smell of rotten fish from the harbour, with an added dose of cow dung and goat pee.”
After residents voiced their disgust on social media, City of Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Dr Zahid Badroodien assured residents that the stench will soon be gone.
“Environmental Health have confirmed that the source of the smell across the city is a ship in the harbour.
The ship arrived last night and is carrying cattle.
It is due to leave the port tonight at 9pm.”
Affected areas included Greenpoint, Observatory, Woodstock and the CBD, and a few Capetonians have reported the eyewatering odour along the V&A Waterfront as well.
There is a really bad ‘stink’ in Cape Town CBD this morning. Maybe I’m going crazy 😭
