Seven people have perished in a collision involving a South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle in Limpopo.
Provincial Police Commissioner in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered an immediate probe into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, 11 February a civilian vehicle collided head-on with a SAPS Toyota light delivery van along the R101 between Mookgophong and Mokopane near Tobias in Waterberg District.
All five people inside the civilian Renault sedan and two passengers in the SAPS vehicle were declared dead on scene.
A suspect and a SAPS officer, were among the passengers inside the SAPS vehicle. The driver of the SAPS vehicle, a sergeant was rushed to the hospital and is currently receiving medical attention.
“The cause of this horrific accident is still unknown and is currently being investigated.
The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has sent mesages of condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the driver a speedy recovery.
The passengers of the SAPS vehicle who perished on the scene were identified as Constable M.M. Makwela attached to the SAPS Naboomspruit. The identity of the inmate, as well as the fve deceased from the other vehicle will be released as soon as the next of kin has been notified.”
Police investigations continue.
