South Africa’s high-flying songstress Tyla has won her first Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance.
At 22 years of age, Tyla continues to fly the South African flag high, since her hit song Water made her an overnight sensation.
In her acceptance speech, the newcomer made sure to mention her home country, proving that she is proudly South African.
“Oh my…What the heck?
What?
Oh my gosh guys, this is crazy. I never thought I’d say, I’m, I won a Grammy at 22.
Guys, I’m, if you don’t know me, my name is Tyla I’m from South Africa, and last year God decided to change my whole life.
So, thank you so much to God, thank you to my team, my family. I know my mother’s somewhere crying in here.
Thank you to the recording academy for this category, it’s so important. I know I’m forgetting something but I won a Grammy.”

Tyla’s parents were in Los Angeles, US for the first time.
The newly crowned Grammy winner shared in an interview on a US radio show that her parents gave her 1-year to “try out this music thing”, and didn’t think she was going to make it this big.
Only after being nominated for the Grammy award in the Best African Music Performance category, did it finally sink in for Tyla’s mom and dad that their daughter’s music career is taking off.
