This week, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, confirmed the 2024 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances.
According to the Sowetan, unpaid fees by NSFAS have forced some universities to “delay maintenance, halt refurbishment of residences, and reprioritize research projects” ahead of the start of the new academic year.
Several universities have detailed to the publication how escalating debt by NSFAS is directly impacting their operations, quality of teaching, learning, and research.
The 959 Breakfast team reached out to listeners who have received support from NSFAS but have not yet repaid their loans. They wanted to understand the reasons behind this, and they also encouraged them to settle their loans as a way to contribute to the scheme’s pay-it-forward initiative.
