The South African Police Service (SAPS) is on the lookout for suspects following a shooting in Zakaria Park (Zak Park) on Monday, 29 January which claimed the lives of two people, leaving three others injured.
As reported by SAPs, an unknown number of armed suspects entered the hall where a donation drive was taking place, and opened fire before fleeing the scene in an unidentified white vehicle.
Chief-Whip of the Johannesburg Council, Cllr. Sithembiso Zungu was among the injured.
The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.
Meanwhile, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Kabelo Gwamanda condemned the brazen shooting where Zungu and ther City and Rand Water officials were attending.
The donation drive was put together to donate school shoes and other items to disadvantaged children in Zak Park, south of Johannesburg.
“This incident once more gives us a shattering impression of the lawlessness and brazenness with which criminal elements terrorize our residents and society.
To have such a tragic incident occur in broad day light and in the presence of community members, and children is beyond one’s comprehension and belief.
The senseless killing of people and officials must be brought to an end as a matter of urgency. “
Kabelo Gwamanda condemned the shooting incident
Tactical Response Units of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) are investigating the incident together with SAPS.
Gwamanda extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those wounded and in hospital a speedy recovery.
