“Apartheid did exist” – Mayor Gwamanda on the renaming of William Nicol to Winnie Mandela Drive.
The renaming of William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela Drive, according to the City of Johannesburg, is part of its effort to bury the history of apartheid.
This he says is the City of Joburg’s attempt at “dismantling the symbols and remnants of oppression and subjugation”.
It would be Madikizela-Mandela’s 87th birthday on Tuesday.
“This is a step towards dismantling the symbols and remnants of oppression and subjugation,”
“Due to the generational gap, I do not think that I qualify to speak to the life of this remarkable woman, except to acknowledge the fact that she was indeed God’s gift to South Africa and that we remain eternally grateful for.
“This symbol marks not just the life of a heroine, but a beacon of hope by which our history was defined. It is, however, in my view that South Africa was denied an opportunity for a female president in the African continent.” said Gwamanda,
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Joburg MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Loyiso Masuku and Joburg Roads & Transport MMC, Kenny Kunene.

MMC for Transport in Johannesburg, Kenny Kunene spoke at the renaming and said all of the apartheid “oppressors”‘ names will be eliminated from the city’s streets.
“The Louis Bothas must go, the Hendrik Potgieter, Hendrik Verwoerd all of them must go. We are the only country that allow ourselves to be traumatised everywhere we drive when we have to direct people. I get angry every time I have to tell somebody that I am on Louis Botha or Hendrik Verwoerd. We have political power, let us exercise it, let us not be apologetic,” Kunene said.
