Gauteng has welcomed 387 babies on Christmas Day, while over 1,700 bundles of joy were delivered across the country on 25 December.
This was confirmed by the Department of Health who recorded a majority of Christmas births in Gauteng, at 40%, followed by KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.
The first Christmas baby, a healthy girl was welcomed at 00h00 at Galeshewe Day Hospital in the Northern Cape, followed by a baby boy at 00h02 at Harry Gwala Regional Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal.
Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, congratulated the parents of babies who were delivered on Christmas Day.
The MEC visited Sebokeng Regional Hospital where she presented the mothers of the newborns with gift hampers.
Academic Hospitals delivered 41 babies, 22 of which were accounted for at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.
This was followed by Steve Biko Academic Hospital where 7 babies were born.
Tertiary Hospitals delivered a total of 20 babies with Tembisa Hospital accounting for 16, and Kalafong with 4 Christmas babies.
Gauteng Regional and District Hospitals delivered 81 babies, while Community Healthcare Centers accounted for 49 Christmas babies.
Of the 387 babies born in Gauteng on Christmas Day, 186 were boys and 201 were girls.
